Time is the trigger. In the pulse-pounding tradition of such innovative thrill-rides as Memento and Pulp Fiction comes this original and terrifically involving thriller about ten people and a ten minute period of time where a crime is committed. With its Roshomon style plot and "smart script", 10 'Til Noon is an indie gem worth discovering.

30 Days
Donell Mays is the star player for his inner-city high school basketball team, the Hoop Burners. When the Burners take on the Tornadoes, a team from the affluent suburbs, tensions run high. Donell goes up against the belligerent Tornadoes star Jason Roberts and trash-talking leads to a brawl that erupts into a riot that must be broken up by the police. The judge sentences the two boys to live and work in each other's community for 30 days. In the 'burbs, landscaper Maura takes Donell under her wing. Her stories of discrimination against Irish immigrants teach him that prejudice comes in many forms. Wealthy Jason, on the other hand, is sent to the city, where he must live in a tiny one-room apartment and work at a local restaurant, serving the people he once sneered at. Through his experiences, Jason learns not to judge others by how they look and where they live. As the two former enemies overcome their hostility, fate brings them back together. Out of respect, Jason attends the funeral for Donell's brother, Jamal Boy. When Jason is shot in a freak accident, Donell is the one who helps him to rehabilitate his arm. Due to his dyslexia, Donell's test scores aren't high enough to get into college and he can't afford tutoring. Jason comes up with an unconventional solution; a fundraising grudge match between their two teams. The two are now true friends and even thought they're pitted against each other on the basketball court, this time, Donell and Jason choose friendship over winning the game.

Architect, The
The Architect is a harrowing and ultimately human story of two very different families. Leo Waters (LaPaglia) is an idealistic architect and patriarch of an affluent suburban Chicago family. Tonya Neeley (Davis) is a pragmatic activist who is trying to keep her family together while living in one of the city's most drug and crime-infested public housing projects. As part of her ongoing campaign to have the projects torn down and decent housing built in its place, Tonya decides that the one signature she needs more than any other on her petition is that of the projects' original architect, Leo Waters. Leo's initial response to Tonya is resistance; he's reluctant to destroy what he created. As the story progresses, both Leo and Tonya are confronted with questions about their own beliefs, not only regarding the housing projects but their personal lives. Based on a play by David Greig, The Architect tackles not only the questions of class and race but also family and its diversities.

Babel
In the remote sands of the Moroccan desert, a rifle shot rings out, detonating a chain of events that will link an American tourist couples frantic struggle to survive, two Moroccan boys involved in an accidental crime, a nanny illegally crossing into Mexico with two American children and a Japanese teen rebel whose father is sought by the police in Tokyo. Separated by clashing cultures and sprawling distances, each of these four disparate groups of people are nevertheless hurtling towards a shared destiny of isolation and grief. In the course of just a few days they will each face the dizzying sensation of becoming profoundly lost lost in the desert, lost to the world, lost to themselves - as they are pushed to the farthest edges of confusion and fear as well as to the very depths of connection and love. In this mesmerising and emotional film that was shot in three continents and four languages and traverses both the deeply personal and the explosively political acclaimed director Alejandro Gonzales Innaritu (21 Grams, Amores Perros) explores with shattering realism the nature of the barriers that seem to separate humankind. In doing so, he evokes the ancient concept of Babel and questions its modern day implications: the mistaken identities, misunderstandings and missed chances for communication that, though often unseen, drive our contemporary lives.

Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys, The
Set in the rural South in the 1970s in a Catholic school, four pre-teen boys (Kieran Culkin, Emile Hirsch, Jake Richardson, and Tyler Long) create a comic book called "The Atomic Trinity" to channel their creativity, imagination, and rebellious adolescent angst. They each develop their own superhero and, in doing so, live out fantasy lives through their empowered, unchained alter egos. Their evil adversaries are exaggerated characters designed after their teachers: Sister Assumpta (Jodie Foster) the stark, peg-legged nun; and Father Casey (Vincent D'Onofrio), the shady, chain-smoking priest. The spotlight of the film shines clearly on the handsome Francis (Hirsch) whose crush on his neighbor and schoolmate, Margie Flynn (Jenna Malone), leaves him tongue-tied. Tim (Culkin) is bolder, and so he rewrites a William Blake poem and uses it to bring together secretly dark Margie with wide-eyed Francis. Their relationship flowers into one of the heavier and more mysterious subplots in the film. Margie is instantly written into the comic as a wounded warrior-heroine who enlists the superheroes to help her in her battles against evil. Meanwhile, the boys are busy planning and occasionally executing devilish pranks at school, eventually taking things a step too far, to tragic result.

Deja Vu (2006)
After an explosion on a ferry kills over 500 people including a large group of party-going sailors, an ATF agent (Denzel Washington) investigates the crime. AN FBI agent (Val Kilmer) also joins the investigation. Impressed with the ATF agent's skills, the FBI agent invites him to join a new team that has a new program that uses satellite technology to look backwards in time for 4-1/2 days to try to capture the terrorist (Jim Cavaziel). Meanwhile a young woman (Paula Patton) who was burned washes up on shore. The body arrives at its location too soon, which leads the agents to believe her death is related to the explosion. As they use the new technology to study the woman, the ATF agent determines that this is not satellite imagery but somehow is using a time warp. From this point in the film, the movie moves from a crime film to a sci-fi time paradox film. Nonetheless, the action is non-stop and always captivating. The end of the film may be confusing to some people, but it is all laid out if one cares to look carefully. Contains some extreme violence that some may find disturbing, particularly during the explosion when many people are shown jumping off the boat in flames.

Flags Of Our Fathers
In February, 1945, one of the fiercest battles of World War II occurs on the tiny island of Iwo Jima. Over a hundred thousand U.S. Marines attack the island stronghold maintained by only twenty-two thousand Japanese, and the slaughter on both sides is horrific. Flags of Our Fathers and Letters from Iwo Jima is Clint Eastwood's tribute to those who lost their lives in the conflict. Flags of Our Fathers focuses on the story behind the iconic photograph of the raising of the American flag atop Mount Suribachi, Iwo Jima's high point. The photograph becomes a powerful inspiration to war-sick Americans, and a symbol of the Allied cause. The three surviving flag raisers, Rene Gagnon (Jesse Bradford), John Bradley (Ryan Phillippe), and Ira Hayes (Adam Beach), are whisked back to the U.S. to help raise funds for the war effort. But the accolades for heroism heaped upon the three men are at odds with their own personal realizations that thousands of real heroes lie dead on Iwo Jima, and that their own contributions to the fight are only symbolic and not deserving of the adulation they are receiving. Each of the three must come to terms with the honors, exploitation, and grief that they face simply for being in a photograph.

Heavens Fall
In the spring of 1931 nine black men were arrested for allegedly raping two young white women. Their age’s ranged from twelve to twenty years and the men were quickly tried and sentenced to the electric chair. News of the Scottsboro convictions fueled the fire of socialism worldwide, forcing an appeal to the United States Supreme Court, resulting in new trials for all nine defendants. Samuel Leibowitz (Timothy Hutton), a New York lawyer with an impressive string of courtroom victories, agreed to represent the accused at their retrials in Decatur, Alabama. His journey into the Deep South symbolised the polarity of the times and set in motion a legal battle that ultimately changed the course of American jurisprudence. This chapter of American history is a story of an epic injustice. From their arrest in 1931 to the release of the last defendant in 1950, their rights were cruelly violated. “Heavens Fall” shines a light on the cultural and political differences that divide us all.
